What it calculates
Seat-based plans often get cheaper per seat as a team grows. There are two common ways to apply tiers. Graduated pricing charges each seat at the price of the tier it falls in. Volume pricing charges every seat at the price of the tier your total reaches.
The formula
- Graduated: total = sum over tiers of (seats in tier x tier price)
- Volume: total = all seats x the price of the tier containing the seat count
- Open-ended top tier covers all remaining seats
Worked example
25 seats with tiers 1-10 Rs 100, 11-50 Rs 80, 51+ Rs 60
- Graduated: 10 x 100 + 15 x 80 = 1,000 + 1,200 = Rs 2,200
- Volume: 25 x 80 = Rs 2,000
- At 51 seats, volume pricing drops every seat to Rs 60 and can make the bill fall as seats are added, which graduated pricing never does
